A wonderful tribute was held with speakers that included members of Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta,  Alpha kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, and representatives for the Sate of California.  There were 40 decades of members of Phi Beta Sigma represented. Soror Rodgers represented for Omega Kappa Zeta and was honored to be able to witness this historic event.

More than 4 million women in this country have become addicted to drugs or alcohol. It is a difficult decision for a woman to go into treatment, and many times they have hit rock bottom before they ever set foot in a treatment center.

The ladies of Omega Kappa Zeta, partnered with a local substance abuse program who treats woman in a homelike environment.  Many of these women walked in with just the clothes on their back and a broken spirit.   The residential treatment facility offers:
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Substance abuse education
  • Family education
  • Parenting education and counseling
  • Mindfulness groups
  • Access to treatment for issues such as domestic violence and sexual abuse
  • Relapse prevention
Our  donations helped give these women a sense of hope and pride to help them on their steps to recovery.

Omega Kappa Zeta participated in the 2nd annual Health Fair at Progressive Community Church in Stockton, CA.  They had a variety of healthcare, fitness, mental health services, nutrition, and children activities. We shared information about Autism and the special education process.  We met people who had their own experiences with Autism, including a mother whose daughter was able navigate the Autism spectrum and was away at college.  This mother was very proud of her daughter and wishes more people understood that Autism was not a disease, but a different way to view the world.   To learn more about Autism please check out The Mocha Autism Network.  To learn more about Progressive Community please check out their website: http://www.progressivecc.org

Family Skate Fitness Night

9/29/2013

Blue and White family skate night was held, September 28th, at Stockton Indoor Sports Complex.  We had about 50 people ranging in ages from 5 to 50 roll, bounce, and skate the night away.   We had a blast skating and did even notice that we were burning hundreds of calories.

According to the American Heart Association, roller skating is ranked among the best aerobic exercises and is equivalent to bicycling and jogging as a cardio workout.  Roller skating is a workout that involves almost all of the body’s muscles and in particular the heart and it works most of the major muscle groups – glutes, quads, abdomen, calves and arms.

But don't take our word for it. Click to find
more reasons to roller skate.
